Due to the interest expressed in the "Handgun Penetration" thread as regards a cell phone's ability to stop a bullet, looking for an excuse to create some reloadable brass, and having run across this kind of nonsense on another forum where, supposedly, a cell phone stopped a 5.56 round in a soldiers flak vest pocket, I decided to verify the voracity of that statement. The following phones were shot at 100yds. with factory Remington .223 55gr. MC ammo. I wanted to use 69gr. Sierra BTHP Matchking reloads since my barrel has a 1:7 twist, and would provide better grouping, but I decided that the crappy factory FMJ's would better replicate combat conditions, and I needed to shoot them to free up some brass for some good ammo! Each phone was shot twice. The Motorola C-139 was shot twice through the back and one bullet exited the front at the * key doing little damage, while the second shot entered closer to the middle of the phone and blew out the front menu key just under the display. The exit holes seem to indicate very little bullet deformation. The Nokia 5513 is (was) a much more stout phone, and was shot twice in the front. The first round entered at the #2 key, while the second round entered between the ^ and v keys on the upper right. The exit wounds as indicated by the forensic photo's indicates severe trauma to the left lung and abdominal areas of the phone .
Conclusions:
Anyone carrying a Nokia would exhibit more severe entry trauma and tissue damage due to the extensive material blow-out and bullet deformation caused by the comparatively thicker structure of the Nokia phone.
Anyone carrying the Motorola Tracfone would probably sustain the same type of wound as would be common in a straight unobstructed shot from a 5.56 round.
The only question now is "Will Nokia or Motorola honor their warranty?"
Stay tuned for next weeks "Boom Box" test.... __________________ Guns Have Only Two Enemies-Rust and Politicians

I guess I won't have to call this one into Mythbusters.
Well done RL. |

Sweet. So in your estimation, would a .22lr or .25 or .32 acp penetrate and cause damage to the carrier if it was in a breast pocket? At closer range, of course. __________________ From C3Shooter:

I ran out of phones...actually I do have one left. Maybe I'll try the Walther .380 on that one.
I have my doubts however that a .380 would completely penetrate a Nokia, it would probably penetrate the Motorola. I have no experience with the .32, but I would assume it would be close to the .380 and would probably penetrate the Motorola. I am almost certain a .25 won't penetrate either, but a .22 LR shot from a rifle probably would. If anyone has extra phones, try them out and post the results! __________________ Guns Have Only Two Enemies-Rust and Politicians

Nice! I think i had one of those Nokia stubbies (OK, maybe three).
Nice rifle, how you got that past the allegedly quite restrictive NY rules i don't know; but it is cool. |

Thank you. There's nothing illegal about it. That's a muzzle protector on the end of the barrel. The magazine is 1989 manufacture. It came with two 10 rd. mags., but it looks nicer with the 30! __________________ Guns Have Only Two Enemies-Rust and Politicians
