Oh I have a regular mattress in my camper and a fire pit
Best of both worlds
I used to backpack a bit in my younger days. The farther from the roads, the better. Knees, back and no real good mountain backcountry in
Oklahoma have put those days to an end.

"Then tell me this: Why would you want to hang around people that get uncomfortable, or even scared, about that kind of thing?" "Maybe to feel normal," I said. He laughed. "Normal's not all it's cracked up to be." "You think?" "Hell, I know." - from Spirits In The Wires, by Charles de Lint.
Haven't been camping for years. We plan on starting up when the kids are a little older. But none of this nansy-pansy-camper stuff for us. We're gonna rough it, just like our forefathers did. In a tent. With an air mattress.
It'll be a few years before we can though.
We tent camped starting when our oldest was less than a year old. He went camping a few times before his brother was born, and then continued to tent camp until we got the RV just a few years ago when they boys were 11 and 13.
Oklahoma has the most deer per hunter of any state though -- not counting Alaska's caribou.
So you are at least lucky there !!!
Interesting I have never heard that before. Yes OK does have many deer but they are typically tiny, even full grown. One deer makes a good meal for six. Heck I recently lost a chocolate lab that if I strapped antlers to him, hed gotten shot. I aint knocking it, really, I am all for OK deer hunting, want proof invite me . Its just that coming from MN, KS, and NE heck they are born at darn near 90 lbs. and that is a full grown one here.

We're just starting to come into our Autumn big time now but the weather hasn't changed for the colder stuff...............YET!.
We haven't even had a frost yet which is a real worry but we've had a heap of rain which has been a blessing as the farmers now have their Winter crops in.
2 months ago we were screaming for rain as it was that dry the trees were chasing the dogs and now it's that wet the paddocks are a dodgy place to be with anything over a Quad bike in most cases.
We've got a fishing competition coming up for the Easter weekend at a local dam and I'll be taking my camper trailer with a new Engel fridge and a generator.
Getting 2 old for the tent thing and the camper trailer has a bunk in it as well as I can put our gear in it and if it rains we've got plenty of sitting room in it with a fridge full of beer.
During Summer I and most of my mates use swags and sleep out under the stars while fishing and in some cases hunting.
Here's a pic of my camping setup,
