Default BOTB: The 1911

First in the Best of the Best series, and probably the most controversial.

What is the best 1911?

Bear in mind, if a Kimber and a Rock Island perform the same, share identical accuracy, have similar finishes, etcetera, the Kimber does not win simply because it is 3 times the price.

Best 1911, my friends?

Why are some 1911's $4000?

What makes 1911's best anyhow? They sure don't have the capacity.

1911's....... I have Sigs, Colts, Kimbers, and Dan Wessons....

For a Production gun, my vote (based on personally owned guns) would be the Dan Wesson Bobtail......

Due to machining, fit, function, ability to carry, accuracy, and looks..

Just my 2 cents

A 1911 built by you with the best custom parts or a modified custome Series 70 or if your a cheap bastard get a Taurus 1911 and then modify it.

Goju - The 1911 is the handgun that all other handguns are compared too. You are probably too young to realize it yet, but once you read some of the litany of people who have used and carried the 1911, and where they were and what they were doing at the time, you will peel back the layer to the best kept secret in the pistol realm.

Over 100 years of military service and it's STILL being issued to high end troops??

Did the lightbulb last that long before it was "improved"??

The Taurus PT-1911 is probably the best 1911 for the money at the moment.

That said, I think the best 1911 that money can buy, and I have shot them all, is the Nighthawk Custom GRP - dollar for dollar. Nothing I have shot thus far matches it's fit, finish, performance and overall quality out of the box.

The company is founded by 11 former pistolsmiths from a collection of big name production 1911 companies that were tired of accountants pulling back the reigns on their work, so they formed their own company. Their customer service is excellent, they use no MIM parts and they are happy to chat with you on the phone about your purchase and what you intended to use it for.

Just my $0.02

JD

Best 1911, my friends?
I've fired Rock Islands. The trigger feels dirty compared to a Kimber. I've fired Wilsons that go for double the cost of Kimbers. The trigger was only slightly better.

JD is always raving about Nighthawks. I'm half tempted to buy one just to see if they're worth $3k.

The funny thing about 1911s is the cost goes up dramatically for slightly better trigger and action.

I will second that and add my $0.02 it is the best 1911 I have ever shot and owned and the customer service is outstanding as stated, only thing is you do pay for quality and it is a little pricy for most people. I have the GRP Recon W/laser and lighter rail frame.
