I've got an older pair of these - NYTRO WP - Winter shoes - Footwear - Footwear - Salomon

This will be the 4th winter I have worn them, the first 3 while working outdoors in NY. They are super comfy and very warm, a little over your budget but definitely worth the extra $25/$30. I'd wear them all year long but they are too warm when the temperature gets above 60deg.

I too have had Sorel's in the past and they are a good winter boot. However, these are the winter boots I have now and they work great.

Salomon Toundra Mid WP Winter Boots - Men's at REI.com

I use these when in Lake Tahoe for the winter snow when not skiing. Very warm boots with good grip. Actually almost too warm.

A pair of gators and full calf medium weight SmartWool socks and you'll be good to go for down to -40 F.
