If on a tight budget, look at the Stevens 200 or Mossberg ATR. The Stevens is a Savage without the Acc-Trigger. I have the Mossberg in .270 and it is a good, no frills rifle. Plenty accurate for hunting. I have a Savage in .308, also, and either one will do the job. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either one again. Either the Stevens or Mossberg can be had for $300. or less.
I also have 7 single shot H&R/NEF rifles in various calibers and I hunt with them more than my bolt actions. These can be bought for around $220.-$240.
Since they are single shot, they are considerably shorter than bolt action for the same barrel length. Really nice in brush or tree stands.
