Yes, a true danger sport.

One of my favorite bits of racing cinematography is the opening sequence and first race in the movie Grand Prix with James Garner. Definitely speaks to a different time in racing.

And here a more modern F1 driver gets to go back in time a bit. Listening to his comments about the car are pretty telling of the level of skill and endurance of the old school drivers.
