As far as bait casting reels I prefer the Garcia's Ambassadeur Reels. I have several a 5500, 6000, & 5000. Second to them I like the smaller Shimanos for the smaller bait casters and lighter fishing.

If you like Smallmouths?
I am also hooked on the Ultra-Light Spinning Reels. Caught this 22" Smalley this morning on the ultra-light rod my buddy built for me and Ultra Light Reel. It was a good morning on the Hollow. Fathers Day morning on the water at 5:00am and back to the house at 8:30 for "Fathers Day" breakfast!

79,

I like largemouth fishing also as well as most. But talking about a fight, obviously you have never caught a big smallmouth. This one came out of the water three times today before I got her in the net. If you have ever caught a very large bluegill with their fight imagine it being the size of a smalley! And you have it. Also you must keep the rod tip up and the line tight all the time even when they are performing their aerial acrobatics or they will spit the lure or bait every time. My largest Smalley caught here was 24" long and 13.5" girth. Have a plastic reproduction mount made of her. I always release them as soon as I take a picture and measure them so someone else can enjoy the experience. Here is a shot of one of the Dale Hollow Largemouths. Caught three that day close to the same size suspended in deep water eating bait fish.

Have a Great Fathers Day to all!!! 03

I love catching smallies and goggle eyes just because they fight so well. Problem being around me there aren't really any big enough left to really mess w. Most people fish em out and keep em if they are even halfass big enough to eat.

Marlin,
If you ever get to Tennessee in the Dale Hollow area you will have to let me know you are here. It is also a big lake of 650 miles of shoreline, deep and clear. They also have house boats for a family outing.
Good luck fishing this year. And I understand about the smalley's being fished out or a lot of pressure. And also the fact that they require access to colder or deeper water to thrive!

Havasu has good bass fishing opportunities but we also have red ear. Like a blue gill on steroids. A guy fishing a plastic worm for bass caught a 5.5 lb record red ear. The strippers are finally starting to pick up again after a 3 year hiatus.
Cranking a spinner against the drag will twist the line.
