Of course it was a joke. Antone Chekhov was a writer of children stories at the turn of the 20th century. That fake flint lock was a copy of a 16th century English Traveling pistol. That said, Who ever did the skit should receive an academy award.

This was a play on Chekhov's comment on the art of stage drama. If a gun is hanging on the wall, he wrote, it must fire in the end. Meaning, everything has to be there for a reason, the rest should be cut off. Perhaps someone has missed the pun.

He was a playwright and short story writer of world renown. He never wrote for children, although his classic works have been included in the grade school curricula.
