Officer was a 5 yr veteran, married, wife and 5 children/stepchildren. No information on shooter other than he is dead. Apparently ambushed officer in the parking lot when he made a traffic stop of another person.

Story here: http://www.vt.edu/

Does anyone know if the LEO had a vest on? And, where was he hit with the fatal shot? I always thought all LEOs wore vest.

I'm not sure if that information is out yet. I was watching news this morning and it appears that the second fatality was the shooter.

All the cops in my town are issued bp vests and stab vests and if they even wear one vest its always the stab vest

Question to all LEOs;

If you had been that Officer would you have done anything differently than he did?

Something had to occur in order for the perp to get that close.

I in No Way am faulting this Officer.

Iam a former EMT-P and worked with some of the finest LEOs who covered my six many, many, times.

Especially on a college campus, it's easy to approach the officers, although, perhaps during a traffic stop not as much.

A little more info- Perp had committed a car jacking in twon down the road the day before. LEo was sitting in his car- (probably writing paperwork) when perp walked up to the car, shot LEO in the head at close range.

In general, you are on a higher state of alert at some times- but you cannot be all the time. And yes, on a college campus, you would be accustomed to people walking up to you.

FWIW, Va Tech is a very large school, population equals that of a small town. Large, very good accredited campus police department.
