Default Angus Dei, a challenge

Angus Dei, or, Samuel Barbers Adadgio for Strings.
A great piece of music. Take a listen and tell me where you've heard it.
I'd say, pretty much eveyrone here has heard this piece. You just have to dig back in the old memory bank to find it.
The challenge? Maybe an appreciation of music you didn't know you had. Maybe you knew it but forgot.
Anyway, give me one movie where it was used. (It's been in a few)

The first time I heard it I was watching 'The Ascent of Man'. A PBS documentary on the rise of mankind. It was a slow motion segment showing; a runner in the blocks, hearing the gunshot, and launching upward and forward into full stride. The point was that even though other animals run, and many animals run faster, ONLY humans do it for fun. Only humans exert themselves to the degree that we do, just for recreation, without any benefit to survival.

It's a very 'popular' piece for funerals. It was a favorite of JFK. The NSO played it 'just for him' after he died. Jackie was the only one in the hall.

I always used to cry when I heard it. It's been used in so many movies and things to manipulate an audience to feel sadness that now it seems like a cheap shot and it's lost it's effect on me.

Here's a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adagio_for_Strings#Film_and_TV_soundtracks

If that doesnt conjure up visions of things we as humans should never ever experience, nothing will. The utter agony, emptiness and desolation it evokes are physical even when your not the one in the situation. The use of it in "Platoon" was nothing short of brilliant, Damn them for hitting that spot so hard and painfully! I just watched Elias die again for the 30th time and here come the tears again, just like the first time I saw it. That movie hurts to watch, yet I watch it again and again.

I found this UTube below pretty spot on, Oliver Stone wasnt far off the mark. Lots of fellow Vets and my neighbors that returned all Phucked up confirmed it through the years. I was so lucky to be just a couple years too young to be part of that war...

I don't think there's an another animal that would climb Mt. Everest just for the hell of it, or run 26 miles for fun. Forget about something like an Iron Man even if they could ride a bike.

BTW, thanks.

I didn't know about Micheal Moore's Sicko.
Damn, I'm disappointed. That fat **** doesn't deserve the privilege to use that music.
