We have solar pannels now that if you covered your roof you would porduce more power than you need and add it to the grid there for get money back from the power company. That is the only reason I want to do. Less bills = MORE GUN MONEY.

My interest in alternative energy sources is self reliance. I want to have cold beer and hot chow when the rest of society has slid down the crapper.

Now THAT is something I can relate to. What scale do you mean? Personal or societal? Having your own ethanol still for fuel, your own solar/wind/microhydroelectric/geothermal/fuel-cell power source to get off the grid and maybe growing some or most of your food sure has its appeal!

I'm talking about a personal setup. 25kW solar, 25kW wind, 25kW diesel generator, diesel oil furnace and a decent sized biodiesel manufacturing setup. The wind/solar/generator is fully redundant as you can see by the numbers. It's about $75k worth of initial cost, but never having to pay an electric bill and not relying on a failing infrastructure is well worth it. Environmental friendliness is just a byproduct of self reliance in our case.

I'm not talking about fully segregating myself from the rest of the world, just severely reducing my dependence on it.

My dad is all for having a car that runs of ethanol. He figured he could use 1/2 of the ethanol to deliver the other half to the bar.

Not sure about that one but hey. I doubt it takes much to build a still.
