They left the breakfast table loaded up on carbs, protein and fat and walked straight to the airport for thier hop up to base camp. Chances are they are still up there. Depending on conditions, it takes 3~4 weeks to summit and get back down. The reason it takes so long is because they don't take oxygen with them. They climb some and stay at that level for a couple of days, and repeat that all the way up and back down. 4 Japanese climbers died in an avalanch last week. I think it was in the national news. I couldn't imagine having 4 weeks worth of food on my back as well as all the gear needed to survive the trek. More power to them.
I heard about that on the news.

This is going to be fun. I was born in Anchorage, but we moved when I was 6 mos old. Anchorage and Denali been at the top of my dream list for quite a long while.

Packing... ugh. It's not the pants or shirts. It's all the socks and underwear you have to pack for a 2 week + trip.

Then I have to pack a suit for formal nights on the ship. Not that I don't look good in a suit, I just hate having to pack one for one night.

It's all worth it Scott!...and they do have laundry service aboard ship for a fee. We went to Whittier AK yesterday and were very fortunate for weather. Whittier is known for overcast and rainy days...we had blue skies..very rare occurance.

Nice pictures Sonic! It is worth it. We fly out late tonight and loved every moment of being up here. With that said, it will be good to be home and get back into the routine.

We saw just about every creature we wanted to in AK...except a Grizzly. Our last night, on our way back to Anchorage...this guy appeared about 6 miles from town after we had givin up hope...he lost traction a couple of times and scrambled around...entertaining to say the least.

Ok...we are home. And downsouth has probably thought about this too. There are some states that are in-your-face, drop-dead gorgeous. I've been to all but 3 states... New Mexico, Maine and Vermont are my holy grail. The drop-dead gorgeous states I mentioned are Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Colorado and California (IMO)..... however,Utah, Florida, Wyoming and Arizona get honorable mention.....all of us that live in the other ones...like Nebraska, the Dakotas, Mississippi, Virginia, Arkansas and Minnesota...well, there's a subtle beauty in those that we all call home. Walleye fishing in Grand Rapids, MN is as good as it gets...the lakes up there are pristine and there's nothing like a gin and tonic with steaks on the grill and a campfire on some lake "up-north". I'll probably live here all my life. I'm sure 'downsouth' would say something similar about Mississippi. I guess the point is... we (still) live in the greatest country in the world. If you get the chance to see the rest of it...you ought to take it....I know people in their 50's that have never left Minnesota...that, to me, is sad....but you should take the time to appreciate you're home state as well

Get on the ship this afternoon. Looking out the window of our hotel room in Vancouver at a very snow covered peak.
