I thought the early mornings might be an issue. See that's head game number one. Ole Sarge will have already drank a pot of coffee, and will have the day all planned out. Nothing like hearing a metal trash can lid smacking on the can while Mr Gung Ho is screaming "Get your goat smellin asses out of that rack! MOVE it MOVE it!!!"

It's bad enough if you are used to waking up early - and can pop right out of bed. Ten times worse if you can't.

Not sure what the bunking accommodations will be now days, but I suspect your entire platoon will all bunk together in one big room. I was at Ft Knox in mid summer. My bed was right in the middle of the row of bunks. There was a fan at each end. Where my bunk was - I couldn't feel the fan. In my opinion, the third bunk from each end is the best place. I know, this is minor...but nothing worse the being dog tired, hot and sweaty and not being able to fall asleep. 33 years ago, and I remember that part very well.

Everyone including me has told you all bad things. I have some very good memories of my time their. Some things you will do are just plain fun! The obstacle and confidence course were a blast. Rappelling was also fun. And you get to spend a lot of time at the range. Plus, you will get to see some cool military gear.

As others have said, get in shape. I got to ROTC field training unprepared. I left with my tail between my legs. Run, a lot, then run some more.

Was squad leader! One guy from Mass. would give me trouble every morning "RIVALEE"and didn't want to get up.

After two weeks of this "Mass-hole", I flipped his bunk over , he was on the top bunk ! "Artical 15" back to E-1..!

Get fit, stay fit.
Leave your ego at home. Basic is supposed to be humbling, expect it.
Keep your mouth shut. It's amazing what you can learn by just shutting up and paying attention.
Don't whine & bitch. Things will suck, it's part of the plan. If you open your mouth to comment, you should have a solution in mind. If not, keep it to yourself.
Try to stay positive. No matter how frustrated and pissed off you get, you will be able to look back & laugh.
Own your screw ups. You will, at some point, screw up. Don't be afraid to stand up and say "Sir/Sgt (as applicable), I F**Ked up!"

Learn to eat fast if you don't already. If you have any habits like coffee, get rid of it now so that it's not adding to your stress levels.

Learn to spell.

You have two ears and one mouth, use them proportionally.

Get over holding grudges! If you don't, your grudge buffer will overflow on your first day.

Embrace what I call the GPS School of Problem Resolution. (GSPR) Simply put, when you f*ck-up don't look to assign blame. spend all your energy to recalculate a new path to the correct destination.

Shun praise and accept criticism.

There are many ways for a junior officer to impress the Captain, there is only one way for the captain to impress the crew, leadership.

Get her dirty, then clean her so she starts to respect you. When her trust is complete, she will serve you well for a lifetime!
