adjusting a pop riveter
my rivet gun breaks too soon. it leaves one end not mashed enough. how do you adjust the handle to make it break later?

MisterMcCool 05-15-2013 11:07 PM

If it is a manual riveter, squeeze once, release and push down again to get another bite closer to the rivet. Squeeze again until it breaks.

thats the problem. i get about 2 or 3 bites and it still snaps early.

MisterMcCool 05-16-2013 11:03 AM

Shorter rivets?

Premature snapulation? ;) I'm with the above poster, shorter rivets maybe?

Check for correct tip attachment? There could just be a defect in the gun too. If all else fails put it on the yard sale list or deep six it.

I am an ole retired US Naval Aviation AMSC. Have shot and bucked a zillion rivets in my day. But, We rarely used blind rivets on aircraft.

When shooting blind rivets. The length of the rivet in ratio to the thickness of the material is going to govern when the shaft will break off. I hope a cross reference chart came with your rivet kit. If not, you may find one on line.

Isolate the problem.
Have a buddy stop by with his gun and some of his rivets.

Try your gun/his rivets and his gun/your rivets.

Work the problem from there. I am guessing either 1) tight jaws on your gun or 2) bad run of cheap rivets.

One of them deserves to go away.

im going to test some different rivets. thanks...AMS.
