Default 3-D Gun Printing at Home...

...just became real!

Michael Guslick, Amateur Gunsmith, Claims To Have Used 3D Printer To Make Functional Semiautomatic AR-15: via HuffPost http://huff.to/PFvxOT

"From pediatric prosthetics to drugs and guitars, 3-D printing is already revolutionizing the way we use, make and think about a plethora of products.

Now, a firearms enthusiast is claiming to have added yet another thing to the list: a functional AR-15 rifle, which he made at home using a 3-D printer and gun blueprints downloaded from the Internet."

I want an M1 Garand. Let's see him make THAT!

That's actually kind of cool, but can you actually make really good guns with it?

Well, we already talked about it- sorry you missed it. The article is also rather misleading.

He did NOT make a "functional AR 15" He used a 3D printer- which builds up microdots of plastic, to make a bare receiver for a .22 pistol. Springs, sear, pins, etc are still steel. The UPPER was not part of the build.

While interesting, have also seen a man skilled with machine tools machine a bare lower out of a block of Delrin plastic.

PS- a 3D printer is close to $10,000.

Damn, didnt realize I missed out :-(

Anywho, yea I read the article and it states that it was made in conjunction with parts off the shelves, I just thought it was worthy of discussion, thats all.

its interesting but not practical. it may give magpul fits of sleepless nights but your not going to get a even junky gun out of a 3d printer. even so you could do the same thing with plastic injection molding machines or home investment casting.

if you had the talent you could probably do the same with drill press and lathe from home depot and a chunk of aluminum.

not just anyone can prep and program a 3d printer to output a working prototype

just a matter of ability and desire.

heh. ive actually worked in a machine shop that used some of the techniques and tools listed. im just being realistic.

3d printer to make a gun is kinda like using this machine to get some toilet paper off the roll...
