Here's From Conway...

Hello All,

I'm a transplanted Missourian. I've been down here now for 10 years & I guess I'm staying...we just closed on our house this past week. I guess being a property owner here makes me an Arkansan. What's best is I'm only 10 miles from the shooting range down on 286 & 2 miles from the Shoothouse over on 64. Hope to see some of you out shooting.

What's the range like on 286? And, what is the Shoothouse? My daughter and her family live in Conway - we visit the Conway area fairly frequently - sometimes just on our way to LRAFB.

Hey, your close to toad lick park. Always wondered how a park got a name like that.

The range on 286 is State operated. It has facilities for handgun ( about 20 stalls) with target setups @15, 25 & 50 yards. The rifle range has ( I think ) 15 stalls with target setups from 25 out to 200 yards. It's pretty cheap too. $3.00 & you can stay all day if you want. It's a nice place, BUT you cannot rapid fire- one shot per second is a rule, No loaded firearms are to be brought onto the property- when you go there, be SURE all guns are unloaded. They will check your firearms when you get there. If anything is loaded, you won't shoot that day. They also have a range for trap shooting. The arkansas Game & Fishing commision has a website & you can access info on the range there, with times opened & range rules & phone #. They are closed on Mon & Tues.
The Shoothouse also has a website. This is an indoor facility for handguns only. They are located about 3 miles east of I-40 on Hwy. 64. It's on the right side of the highway & sneaks up pretty quick as you aproach it. It's a blue colored steel building- don't turn into the first steel building you see on the right. Shoothouse is the next one on the right & is in a tight dip off the highway- their parking lot (if you want to call it that) has a bit to be desired of it! Tom DuPriest is the owner- NRA certified instuctor who teaches self defense classes AND classes for certification for your concealed carry permit. There are also classes exclusively for women. This is a nice place to spend an afternoon. LOTS more on their website.
Toad Suck got it's name from rivermen who used to stop there back in the 19th century, when the place was a haven for taverns & LOTS of drinking. Men would stumble out & sleep it off on the shore of the river. One guy mention how they looked like bloated toads lying around after sucking on their alcohol.....hence the name, Toad Suck.

Thanks for the answer. We pass the sign on 40 going to hwy65n. That lake looks real fishy with the cypress trees and boat docks.

Howdy! I also live in Conway :) over on Meadowlake. I went to that range the other day with my new .40.. Was pretty fun although I have a lot of practice to do :p

Yeah, they reopened the pistol range this week & I was there Weds. Morning. The place looks pretty different with all the beamed walls between each target distance. I think I'm going to shoot all my lead bullets there & my jacketed ones at the indoor range over on 64. If you want to practice your tight groups & rapid trigger finger, the Shoothouse is the only place you're allowed to fire in rapid succession.

Shoothouse is nice, owner is great, but its too expensive. I personally like shooting outdoors much more any way. One thing I do like about it, is its only like 5 minutes away. Another thing I'm not a big fan of, is Shoothouse doesn't give military discounts unless your Active Duty, which to mean is kind of discrimination against disabled veterans or retired military, but that's just me. Being a disabled vet I wasn't a big fan of this.
