deer hunting

What was the main hunting cartridge used back in the old days I'm talking about before the win 30-30 (1895) for deer and other same sized game?

I'm thinking something like this:

The first American military arm to be mass-produced was the 1861 Springfield Rifled Percussion Musket.

Nice Dan Daly quote!

Ok that helps a little, how did they hunt deer and what was the popular arm/ round for deer hunting?

I imagine the old stable of black powder rounds starting with the Henry .44 Rimfire, 44-40, 38-40,, 32-20 and the 38/55 WCF and the 45/70 Govt were in the hunt for favorites.
