Went to a gun show yesterday...

it was the best of times and the worst of times. Military caliber ammo cost 4 times what it was less than a month ago and most military style rifles were selling for at least twice (AR's $1,800-$2,300, AK's $800-$1,000+) their pre December rates. Hi-cap rifle mags were averaging 2-3 times the pre Newtown prices at $30-$40 for 20 & 30 rounders. OTOH, there was plenty of ammo for sale, no shortage of magazines and there were about as many "black" rifles available as usual. Pistols and pistol mags were in ample supply and there didn't seem to be any appreciable price increases on them since the show held here in November. I have plenty of ammo and enough AR's and AK's in the safe already so I wasn't looking to buy a new rifle. However, I did break down and buy a complete NIB Bushmaster upper with two 26 rd mags in 7.62x39 that will go on one of my M&P-15 rifles. Best of all it was actually $100 LESS than the $800+ MSRP listed at the Bushy website. There were a number of other tables also offering complete uppers, with some 5.56 uppers selling for as little as $500. I guess the panic buying hasn't reached everything yet!

Anyway, it was a good day overall unless you were looking to get a good deal on an assault style rifle and/or ammo for it. Supplies of everything were at about the usual levels, the crowds were even bigger than usual and except for the already mentioned items, there were still good deals to be had. The next scheduled show will be in March. I look forward to seeing if the upward trend in prices has continued or will have leveled off. Better yet, maybe prices will have started to crash and all the folks who paid a MAJOR premium during this latest scare will be mumbling in their beer as they see prices drop and supplies return to normal?

FYI, this is a picture of the new upper I got from the BM website.

I didn't notice anything, but I really wasn't looking. OTOH, I have seen them offered on a few of the gun sites. Cheaper than Dirt, Spike's Tactical and Daniel Defense come to mind. I know for a fact that Daniel Defense & Spikes had them for well under $300.

Nice post. The wording & syntax succinctly delivered. Thanks. Price gouging is unconstitutional ;), or so it should be; however, gun shows are nice to go to. I didn't this time as I lacked nothing in the way of ammo or firearms. But a friend of mine went and was shocked to see a vendor seeing a AK 30 rd mag for $50 dollars! Holy Smoke!

It's a trickle down effect starting directly with the manufacturers and distributors. If it costs me $900-$1000 to build a rifle that should cost me $600 to build you can bet that will be reflected in the sale price.

Hysteria and opportunity make for inflation and great profits. It's not illegal and we don't have to buy.

Patient my people, prices are starting to and will come back down . Maybe not in the next 60 days back to normal but they will . Stripped lowers are finally coming back down what was selling for $400-$450 2 weeks ago , auctions are closing between $300-$350
BCGs that sold for $400 are now closing around $300 . Its coming back slowly so be patient . I told friends that wanted to spend $2500 for a $800 AR to sit tight and wait it out . I think I told them the right thing so long as the ban doesnt pass . Even if it does I think some people will get scared they will get confiscated and sell off their rifles at a more reasonable price than what they are currently selling at.

I’m glad I don’t have to buy anything at the moment. I have (2) AR15's and have 2K rounds for each. I usually stock around 1K per caliber but since I knew that the sizzle was going to hit the fan eventually, I wanted to be ready, so I doubled everything. So, I am pretty stocked for 9MM, 45ACP, 223/556, and762X39. There is too much price gouging out there.

I checked the Bushmaster web site and to my surprise they have 7.62x39 specific magazines available. I ordered two more and they should be here before the end of the week. I guess there must not be a big demand for them (yet) since all 5.56 & .308 Bushy mags were on back order. OTOH the 7.62x39 uppers are also not in stock, so someone is buying them.
