The Increasing Threat of Gun Confiscation by State Lawmakers

It's the quiet and often whispered rumor whenever gun owners meet. "This is the next step before they start going house to house." That's right, the elephant in the back of the room that is pushing everyone to the gun counter-- gun confiscation.

Well on the brightside, it looks like the leftist 'gun violence' (they used to call themselves gun control advocates until they saw the bumper stickers about proper grip) crowd is losing ground in Washington. Without enough support to make a go of AWB 2013, the bill may not even make it to the floor to be voted down embarrassingly. However, it looks like several states are making end-runs for their own updated bans.

Moreover, in a truly scary note, many are mentioning gun confiscation-- not grandfathering.

Californian Gun Grab

The west coast has apparently been shocked by the news that New York State recently adopted the harshest gun control laws in the country in recent weeks. In a determined effort to one-up and remain the 'Best Coast', California state legislators are rushing 10 new gun bills through their respective houses as fast as possible. These include a requirement for anyone buying ammo to have a background check first, specifically banning revolving cylinder shotguns (sorry Judge owners), and requiring all handgun owners to obtain a safety certificate every 11 months to keep their guns. The scariest of these bills involves banning the possession of magazines holding more than 10 bullets, even by those who now own them legally. All weapons would have to be registered, a move that on a long enough timeline would led to confiscation.

State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) on Thursday defended the huge gun control package, saying, "California's tough gun laws have been exploited long enough."

Say it aint So Missouri

In a sign that the hysteria is spreading, the Show Me State is now looking at wholesale confiscation to save lives. Missouri House Bill 545 has just been introduced that calls for banning outright any gun classified by the bill's own sweeping definition of an 'assault weapon'. Once enacted the owners of such hardware in Missouri will have a very narrow list of things they are allowed to do with their pre-2013 legal ARs, SKSs, Mini-14s, and others.

From the bill:

"Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall have ninety days from such effective date to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution:

(1) Remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from the state of Missouri;

(2) Render the assault weapon permanently inoperable; or

(3) Surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to the appropriate law enforcement agency for destruction, subject to specific agency regulations.

5. Unlawful manufacture, import, possession, purchase, sale, or transfer of an assault weapon or a large capacity magazine is a class C felony."

There is no grandfathering, no provision for keeping it, just selling it out of state, destroying it, or turning it in-- or risk felony charges. In Missouri, a Class C Felony is the same level as second-degree assault, involuntary manslaughter, and many child molestation charges. In MO, the punishment for a Class C felony is a maximum of 7 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000.00, a term of 1 year in the county jail, or any combination of fine and imprisonment. If this bill passes, that will be what the state thinks of AR owners.

Just days later Minnesota Democrats were pushing similar legislation using nearly identical language as the Missouri bill. This leads one to suspect that a coordinated effort is being taken by left-leaning gun control advocates nationwide to circumvent what looks to be a stalled effort in the Federal Congress to adopt these measures.

As always, if you have an opinion on this, be sure to call your all of your representatives at the local, state, and federal level just to make sure your voice is heard.

this is just another attempt to take guns away from law abiding citizens. it is a proven fact (check the fbi's records on gun related issues, there are more attacks with knives, clubs and other non-firearm related items that have been used in violent manners.) the political elite need to get their facts straight and come to the conclusion that it is proven statistically and by documentation that in reality, guns in the hands of law abbiding citizens are a direct deterent to crimininals. Thus more guns in the proper hands equals less crimes

ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ?

That was supposed to be something like MOAON AABE spelled with Greek letters.
