At SHOT 2014, SIG Sauer introduced their next gen of modern rifle, and, by changing out bolts and barrels, its chambered in 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, and .300 AAC BLK. If that isn't enough for you, apparently it can be set up for standard GI AR mags or Warsaw Pact AK mags. They call it the 556xi

Features

The whole series of rifles comes with just about anything you can think of feature wise. Flip up sights, two stage triggers, short stroke gas piston action (not direct impingement!) with an adjustable valve, and low profile M1913 rails are standard on all models. There are fully ambi controls including the magazine release, bolt release and safety selector, and the ability to change the charging handle to southpaw use brings us a smile. The old-school Swiss SG550 style side-folding stock rounds out this new SIG rifle but this can be changed to a US M1913 style. But, as they say, that's not all...

Swappable calibers

What we think is the coolest feature is the concept that the same receiver can be several different calibers. According to what we are getting from SIG, all that is needed is a new barrel and bolt and you can go from 5.56 to 7.62x39, to .300 AAC at home.

The 5.56mm version has a 16" button rifled chrome lined barrel, 1:7 twist and an A2 flash hider but a 10-inch SBR model is available if you want to go the NFA route with it. Instead of a serialized lower and a swappable upper as on AR-15 types, the 556xi goes the other way. On their gun, the upper is the controlled part while the lower is replaceable without changing the serial number. Want to go from 5.56 to AK? Swap that lower out along with the barrel and bolt and you are good to go.

Admit it, when you saw him slap in the AK mag, made you go all melty right?

There are a couple different base models. These include the 556xi Russian chambered in the always-popular 7.62x39mm and the P556xi, a pistol-only model with a quad rail and forearm brace in lieu of a buttstock to stay away from the SBR boogieman.

However, with the market for super nice AR platforms growing by the minute, this gun could be a nice addition to the person who is looking to have the flexibility to get one serialized gun in potentially three popular calibers-- if the price is right.

I like it but it will probably cost more than buying 2 ARs in .300blk and 5.56 and an AK put together....
